The effect of small dose of propantheline (Pro-Banthine^(¢ç)) on the heart rate in the anesthetized and the comatose patient

Abstract
Propantheline (Pro-Banthine) is a potent anticholinergic drug. Being a quaternary ammonium compound, it does not cross the blood-brain barrier and thus has no central effects.
A small dose of propantheline (0. 5mg) was injected intravenously to normal persons (awaked state), the anesthetized and the comatose patients, and compared its effect on the heart rate in these three groups.
The results are as follows:
1) In the awake state, propantheline (0. 5mg) did not change the heart rate.
2) In the comatose state, propantheline (0. 5mg) produced a significant increase in the heart rate.
3) In the anesthetized state, propantheline (0. 5mg) produced also a significant increase in the heart rate.
4) From the above results, it is considered that sympathetic ganglionic blocking effect is less than other anticholinergic drugs.
